The beauty of orange and pink that reflected on the sand as the sun rose did not capture Mena's attention. It was the half-curled slump ahead of them that had beckoned her to this spot on this day.

A breeze carried the scent of desert flowers as lizards, and small rodents skittered between rocks. The world was awakening. Despite that, Mena noticed there was no movement from the one that held her attention.

      Not a single breath.

Without uttering a word, she pointed to what would look to most like a heap of rags on the sand.

"What?" Marcous asked shaking his head. "Him? No. The buzzards have already landed. Even a sorceress of your abilities can’t save him."

She considered the sweaty, short, fat man who disguised his true self in opulent clothing. "You know what your problem is?" She kept her voice silky sweet as her tall slender frame stepped off the wagon. “You have no faith." Mena flashed her green eyes, daring him to challenge her.

He turned to the rest of the bandits with a shrug. “Whatever witch.”

She ignored the insult. She knew it was the only defense he had at this point. "Remain here." Mena sounded more confident than she felt. "This won't take me long." A gust of wind kicked up blowing her scarlet hair behind her, blending it with her burgundy robe. These robes were her favorite as they made her appear like of a river of blood flowing through the air when the wind blew. And in this desert, the wind never stopped blowing.

The sense of every eye from the bandits following every step as she strode toward the slump prickled her neck. She lifted her head, yet, her outward confidence hid her inner fears.

Mena prayed she wasn't too late.
